4 hours worth of 1k criterium. i watched juniors, masters, women, and then "pros". most did 40 minutes but the big boys were scheduled for 90. no riders i'd ever heard of but there were UCI teams sending reps : cylance, team illuminate, holowesko, and novo noridisk (development). due to the turns of this course i was able to position myself in such a way that i could watch them twice per lap if i chose.
side note: i almost caused a huge crash due to a spotter/safety volunteer who was a freaking idiot. you know in large races when there is someone with an orange flag standing on road furniture to insure riders do not contact it? yeah, those guys. well this lady was flagging a corner and told me to move an orange cone from the sidewalk onto a small pothole on the course. i did that and a few seconds later the peleton came through multiple riders hit the cone and nearly crashed. a team rep of some kind picked up the cone and tossed it as far as he could off course. i then looked up and down the straightaway i was on and realized that the pothole was a water pipe location of some kind and there were probably 20 of them in line about 10 meters apart, so if riders hit it they were choosing to.

end again next year. but i might also watch the 80 mile mountain top finish or the TT.
we were rough calculating the speeds 0.64 mile course in 1:10 2nd lap, 1:12 3rd lap, then they settled into the 1:20-1:25 range in all laps except those where crashes occurred. those were in the 1:50 range. the race was suspended due to wind high enough to blow over all their signage (including traffic barriers), then the race finished a half hour later with 10 laps to go.
i will definitely att
Live and learn and next time tell stupid people waving a flag that the race organizers placed the cones, bales of hay and other items for a reason and it is NOT her duty to have some guy (you) walking past to re-position such items. I am thankful that you did not get hit or run over. It would have ruined your day for sure..
...riders will be moving along at speeds upwards of 30 mph. If you got run over by that you could have been killed or seriously injured. That woman with the flag is an idiot imo. In reality I am sure that if these riders were cat 1/2/3 they knew what was present on the course such as pot holes they would have known how to deal with it. They all ride the course and they should know.
Any competent race official would not get a spectator involved in doing anything like that. It would be a liability issue first and for most. I don't think she knew what she was doing but then that's to be expected at these little local races. If you were run over by the peloton or even hit by a rider or two then the race organizers would be responsible. A peloton containing cat 1/2 or even cat 3
Nope, i had nothing to do with the race. i was walking by and she asked me to move it.
the flag people were only at certain intersections and at all the corners, but they weren't positioned very well. the top riders were leaning into the last corner very tight and spectators would get surprised and have to move backward further from the front of the curb, but there was no additional flag perso
Were you working for the race organizers? If you were not and you were just a spectator then that "woman with the flag" is an idiot and she should be barred from even being near a bike race. I have been to many races and those people with flags are there to keep spectators OFF the course.
